Taipei International Book Exhibition 13-18 February 2008
In 2008 Australia was the guest country at the Taipei International Book Exhibition, a trade book fair, which also included exhibitions.
The Australian Pavilion presented the latest publications by Australian book publishers from Australian and some authors were also present for the opening. As the guest country Australia was obligated to organise exhibitions of books and book related works that reflected Australian culture.
grahame galleries + editions was asked by the Australian Commerce and Industry Office in Taiwan to curate and exhibition of Australian Artists’ Books from The Centre for the Artist Book, the gallery’s collection of over 500 artists’ books. An exhibition of artists’ books was a first for the Taipai International Book Exhibition.
The curator of the Australian Artists’ Books Exhibition, Noreen Grahame, was given the task of not only selecting works but also of taking them as luggage on flights to and from Taipei and of setting up the display. Twenty-seven books by sixteen Australian artists were exhibited in five purpose designed cases arranged at the entrance of the Australian Pavilion.
Artists in the exhibition included: Ian Blamey; David Burnett; Jan Davis; Noreen Grahame; Juli Ha of The as; John Honeywill; Robert Jacks; Peter Lyssiotis; Ron McBurnie; Milan Milojevic; Adele Outteridge; Michael Phillips; Glen Skien; Stephen Spurrier; The Contextual Villians (Rachel Peachey, Paul Mosig, Emily Robinson, Surya Bajracharya); Jonathan Tse.
The exhibit was one of the ‘hits’ at the Taipei International Book Exhibition and caused a media crush after the pre-exhibition press conference.
Public response to the curator’s daily tours of the exhibits was overwhelming and The Australian Artists’ Book Exhibition was farewelled by the Taiwanese military!
